Things you can do when your flight it overbooked

Ever rushed to your gate only to hear the dreaded announcement: “This flight is overbooked”? Airlines often sell more tickets than there are seats, betting that some passengers won’t show. But when everyone does show up, things can get stressful. Don’t worry — here’s what you can do if you find yourself bumped off your flight.

1. Know Your Rights

If you're involuntarily bumped, especially on a U.S. or EU flight, you’re usually entitled to compensation. This can include cash, travel vouchers, or even hotel and meal coverage if you're delayed overnight. Always ask what you’re owed — and don’t be shy about insisting on it.

2. Volunteer (Strategically)

If you're flexible, volunteering to take a later flight can actually work in your favor. Airlines may offer perks like upgraded seats, meal vouchers, lounge access, or even several hundred dollars in credit. Just make sure to get everything in writing.

3. Ask for Alternatives

Politely but firmly ask the gate agent:

  • Can you rebook me on the next flight?

  • Are there flights on partner airlines?

  • Can I get an upgrade if I wait?

Agents are often more helpful when you're calm, so stay cool.

4. Use Airline Apps

Sometimes rebooking yourself through the airline’s app or website is faster than standing in line. You might find open seats the gate agent hasn’t offered yet.

5. Charge Your Devices & Save Receipts

If you’re stuck for hours, having a charged phone (and snacks) will keep you sane. Save any receipts if you spend money due to the delay — these can often be reimbursed.
