Statement of Taliban chief Akhundzada: Only Sharia applies in Afghanistan
Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada rejects Western laws and asserts that Sharia is the only law needed in Afghanistan. He also emphasizes strict policies on women's rights under Taliban rule.

Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has said that there is no need for Western rule in Afghanistan and as long as Sharia is in force, self-rule has ceased to exist. He reviewed this in the Gurumantra given on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr at the Idgah Mosque in Kandahar.
Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid shared the audio of Akhundzada's 50-minute lecture on the social media platform 'X'. In this, the Taliban leader said that Islamic laws are paramount and "we will make our own laws, there is no need for western laws." He also accused western countries of being anti-Islam, referring to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
Taliban's strictness: Strict restrictions continue on women
By implementing Sharia law, the Taliban have imposed many strict restrictions on Afghan women and girls. Due to this, they have been deprived of education, jobs, and most government positions. Due to these restrictions, the Taliban has faced international criticism, although they have maintained diplomatic relations with some countries like China and the United Arab Emirates.
After taking over Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban initially promised a liberal regime, but Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada implemented strict policies. The Taliban has no strong opposition within the country, which keeps its grip on power.
