Hyderabad: Doctors of Niloufer Hospital were successful in saving four premature babies

Four premature babies were saved after tireless efforts by doctors at Niloufer Hospital. Amrita, a 24-year-old mother from Hastinapur in Hyderabad, gave birth to quadruplets at Niloufer Hospital on February 22. Two boys and two girls were born through a caesarean section due to premature delivery. All the four babies were born before their due date.

Critical Neonatal Care

The babies weighed 1.6 kg, 1.5 kg, 1.4 kg, and 1.2 kg, respectively. They required immediate ventilator support due to their premature birth and low birth weight. They were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) under the supervision of Dr. L. Swapna, Head of the Department of Neonatology. The babies remained on mechanical ventilators for 7-10 days to support their breathing.

Help from Human Milk Bank

In the initial days, Amrita faced challenges in breastfeeding all the four babies. With the help of the human milk bank at Niloufer Hospital, the babies were given a mixture of their mother's milk and donor human milk.

Dealing with the Complications of Premature Birth

The newborns faced many of the complications common to premature babies, including sepsis, jaundice, apnea, and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). One baby required eye surgery, which was performed with the help of specialists from Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital.

Recovery and Discharge

At 35 days, the condition of the babies gradually improved, and they were shifted from the NICU to the general ward. At discharge, their weight had increased to 1.7 kg, 1.92 kg, 1.86 kg, and 1.54 kg.

Dr. L. Swapna said, “Managing four premature babies is always a challenge. The coordinated efforts of our NICU team, along with the support of the Human Milk Bank and ophthalmologists, helped these babies recover successfully.” Expressing gratitude, Amrita said, “It was a tough journey, but the doctors and nurses at Niloufer Hospital took excellent care. I am relieved that all my babies are now healthy and are dependent only on breast milk.”

The Need for Regular Follow-up Checkups

Continuing care: The babies will require regular follow-up check-ups to monitor their development and growth. Medical experts emphasise the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, immunisation, and continuous monitoring for their long-term health. The successful discharge of the four babies is a significant achievement for the neonatal care unit of Niloufer Hospital, cementing its role as a leading centre for high-risk pregnancy and premature infant care.
